How to Request Help

We help people with disabilities who have disability-related legal problems.

You can read more about the kinds of problems we can help with on our Focus Areas page.

We do not help with general legal problems that are not related to your disability. For more information, view our Issues We Do Not Handle page.

Our Process

While we would like to help everyone who calls us, our resources are very limited. Some issues also fall outside our Focus Areas, and we cannot assist with those (see our Focus Areas page for more details.) If we are unable to take your case, we will:

  • Give you information about your rights
  • Offer information on how you might be able to advocate for yourself
  • Refer you to other agencies you can ask for help

All our services are free.

Your calls are important to us. We respond to all requests for help in 1-2 business days.

What to Expect

When you call, an intake advocate will ask you questions about you and your legal issue, such as:

  • Your name, address, and phone number
  • Your disability
  • Some facts about your problem or complaint

If you have documents related to your legal issue, please have them ready when you call. If an intake advocate is not available when you call, you will receive a call within 48 hours.

We also collect demographic information such as race and gender. We must ask these questions to report to our grant funders. We will never identify you by name in those reports.

Our intake advocates can provide general information about your rights. Our intake advocates are not attorneys. They cannot tell you whether something is discrimination, or if your rights were violated.

Issue Review

We use our Focus Areas to decide what types of cases we can take. Our staff will review your information. If your issue is within our Focus Areas, we will decide what kind of help we can give you.

If we can investigate your issue, your case will be assigned to a legal staff member. We will send you a letter telling you to expect a call from an attorney or advocate.

We understand you may be unhappy if we cannot take your case. Our Grievance Policy explains how to make a complaint.
